ABA Conference Highlights Emerging Legal Issues in Health Care

CHICAGO, June 8, 2012 — How will the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act legislation and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 transform the U.S. health care delivery system and culture of medicine? What are effective avenues for communication between government and the medical community in the wake of increased regulatory and enforcement efforts? How is the physician workforce landscape changing? These and other emerging issues facing doctors and their lawyers will be the focus of the _ Health Law Section and Chicago Medical Society Physician-Legal Issues Conference 2012 June 14–15 in Chicago.

Panels of lawyers, doctors and other health care experts will discuss the legal ramifications of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the latest information regarding criminal and civil actions affecting physicians, strategies for preventing billing and coding issues from turning into civil and/or criminal cases, and HIPAA privacy breaches during this conference.

Stephen Ondra, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and former senior policy adviser for health affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs under President Obama, will discuss “The State of the Physician” June 14 from 11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. The presentation will include an update on the state of the health care industry from the physician’s perspective and present viewpoints from private practice, the American Medical Association and government health policy makers.

Other discussions will center on:

  • Identifying the practical and legal considerations involved in maintaining an independent physician practice in today’s health care marketplace;
  • Recognizing effective avenues for communication between government and the medical community in the wake of increased regulatory and enforcement efforts;
  • Identifying issues that impair physicians from doing their jobs and effective solutions;
  • Explaining the physician’s role in avoiding the wrongful use and disclosure of protected health information.
