ABA Congratulates Justice Sotomayor

CHICAGO, Aug. 6, 2009 –  “The _ congratulates Justice Sonia Sotomayor on her confirmation as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” said ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm.  Justice Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and only the third woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.  Lamm called the appointment a historic day for the nation and added, “With this appointment the Court better reflects the population of our country.  I believe that makes our Court all the stronger.”
Stephen N. Zack, ABA president–elect and the first Hispanic to hold this position, also applauded the appointment.  “Justice Sotomayor’s appointment sends an important, hopeful sign to the nation’s fastest growing population,” he said.  “No office and no achievement should be beyond the reach of a highly capable person.  As one who understands firsthand the effects of bias, I thank the Senate for confirming this qualified Hispanic woman to our nation’s highest court.
