Statement of ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm on Death of Proskauer Rose’s Steven Krane

The legal profession has lost one of its shining stars.

Steven C. Krane, general counsel for Proskauer Rose, was a brilliant lawyer, wonderful leader and good friend to so many in the _.

Steven also was one of the nation’s foremost experts in the field of ethics and professional responsibility and was a model in those areas in his daily life.  I was honored to have him serve on my Commission on Ethics 20/20, designed to look at the U.S. system of lawyer regulation in the context of advances in technology and global legal practice developments.

Steven gave back to the profession in numerous ways beyond his work on the commission. Recently, he and Proskauer Rose successfully represented the _ pro bono in the lawsuit against the Federal Trade Commission on the Red Flags Rule.

Steven’s work, as well as his generosity of self, will sorely be missed.

We are pleased that the New York Bar Foundation is honoring Steven’s memory by renaming the Student Loan Assistance for the Public Interest Fund (SLAPI) in his memory.  This fund provides loan assistance to eligible law school graduates in public service work.

Steven was instrumental in spearheading the initiative, in coordination with the NYSBA Special Committee on Student Loan Assistance for the Public Interest, to establish the Fund. The SLAPI Program was designed to help alleviate the significant debt burden of young attorneys who opt to dedicate their legal talents to public service. To be eligible for the program, candidates must have been admitted to the bar within the past five years and be employed to work at least 35 hours per week in New York State at an organization providing civil, criminal or child welfare/juvenile justice legal services to low-income people; a federal, state or local government agency; or similar organization.

Donations checks may be sent, payable to The New York Bar Foundation, to:

The New York Bar Foundation
One Elk Street
Albany, NY 12207.
Attn: The Steven C. Krane Fund

The check’s subject line also should indicate the “Steven C. Krane Fund.”

With nearly 400,000 members, the _ is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
