President Zack Statement Re: House Vote to Cut LSC Funding by $70 Million for Remainder of FY 2011

The promise of American justice and fairness cannot be an empty one. But that’s what will happen if funding for legal help to poor and working class families is slashed as proposed. These cuts would hurt people in every region, from Kansas to Kentucky, Texas to Virginia, Ohio to Florida.

To honor the words our founding fathers gave us, “Equal Justice Under Law,” we must find a way in this recession to protect funds that help struggling families handle crises involving their homes, bills, health and well-being. Legal aid providers, backed by Legal Services Corporation, do this important work. The _ will fight to ensure they can continue it.
