50 Years After Gideon: Stephen Bright Urges Overhaul of Indigent Defense System
Stephen Bright, president and senior counsel for the Southern Center for Human Rights, calls the current indigent defense system an absolute disgrace to the legal profession and outlines the problems he has seen over the years, during the day-long Eighth Annual Summit on Indigent Defense Improvement, “Gideon at Fifty: The Way Forward,” on Feb. 9 at the ABA Midyear Meeting in Dallas.
This video is an excerpt of his speech during the program, sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants.
