ABA Honors Transgender Solo Practitioner with Inaugural Stonewall Award

Mia Yamamoto, a Vietnam combat veteran and private practitioner since 1984, serves on the board of the National Asian Pacific _, Criminal Courts Bar Association and International Bridges to Justice, which provides due process education to the judicial systems of China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.  This year she was honored by the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission for her advocacy on behalf of the LGBT community.  She also received the Harvey Milk Legacy Award from Christopher Street West/LA Pride 2012.

The Stonewall Award recognizes contributions by the recipients thereof to the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in the legal profession, and/or to LGBT legal issues, to be awarded by the ABA Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

Established by the ABA in 2007, the SOGI Commission works to secure for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons full and equal participation in the ABA, the legal profession and the justice system.
