Lynn Scarlett, Former Deputy Secretary of the Interior, to Discuss Environmental Sustainability at ABA Conference in Salt Lake City

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 14, 2013 — Lynn Scarlett, former deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of the Interior and co-director of the Center for the Management of Ecological Wealth at Resources for the Future, will speak at the 42nd Spring Conference on environmental law hosted by the _ Section of Environment, Energy and Resources March 21 – 23 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Environmental officials and representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of the Solicitor, and the U.S. Department of Energy will also speak and focus on domestic environmental and energy sustainability. Specifically, the conference will address the environmental impacts of the use and development of natural resources, including fracking, coastal zone land use, renewable energy and cleanup of sites contaminated with hazardous substances.

Program highlights include:

“Coastal Zone Land Use, Renewable Energy and the Implementation of the National Ocean Policy: Legal Challenges and Opportunities” — This program will address how the U.S. prioritizes and maximizes its sustainable use of the oceans and coasts — fishing, tourism, energy production, shipping and national security — and how this works within the existing legal framework, particularly in regards to coastal zone land use and the development of renewable energy.
March 21, 3:15 – 4:45 p.m.

“Freezing Fracking: The Legal Implications of Bans and Moratoria on Hydraulic Fracturing” — Panelists will discuss the regulation of hydraulic fracturing and how new rules by various federal agencies interact with existing state oil and gas production regulations, including their relation to national energy policy and potential conflicts between state and municipal law.
March 21, 3:15 – 4:45 p.m.

“Stormwater: From Regulation to Resource” — This panel will examine the possibilities of turning stormwater, once a liability, into a valuable resource.
March 22, 10:30 a.m. – noon
